Walking Pads with Incline: How to Read the Incline Spec

A walking pad with incline tilts the deck up at the front

A walking pad with incline is a walking pad whose deck can sit higher at the front than at the back. You walk on a slight slope instead of a flat belt, a bit like a gentle hill. Everything else about it is still a walking pad: low, compact and made for walking.

This page lists only pads whose maker states an incline, with the figure as listed. "Incline" in a product title without a number or a setting doesn't count. Neither does a photo where the pad looks a little tilted.

Step count: St. Paul has hills, and the duplex is two blocks from one of them. In January, the hill to Summit Avenue is a sheet of ice with a sidewalk underneath somewhere. That's when a slope you can set with a remote starts to make sense.

Three ways makers build incline

Makers describe incline in three ways, and the table says which one each maker states.

• Fixed incline. The deck is built at a set angle and stays there. No adjustment.
• Manual incline. You change it by hand, usually with the belt stopped: flip-down feet, a knob or a set of positions.
• Automatic incline. A motor raises and lowers the deck while you walk, from a remote, an app or buttons.

Fixed incline is the simplest and has nothing extra to break. Manual incline adds choice, but you'll probably set it once and leave it. Automatic incline lets you change the slope mid-walk, which is the closest thing to a real hill. It also adds a motor, and the listing should say how many settings it has.

Percent or levels: read which one the maker uses

Incline (as stated) in the table shows the maker's own words and numbers. Makers use two different scales:

• Percent. The slope, like a road grade. A 5% incline rises 5 inches for every 100 inches of deck length.
• Levels. Steps on the maker's own scale, like level 1 to level 12. A level is not a percent.

Here's my one opinion on this page: a stated percent beats a level number. A percent tells you the actual slope and lets you compare two pads. A level only tells you where you are on one maker's dial. If a listing gives levels and no percent, the table shows the levels, and you can't compare them across brands.

To picture a percent, do the arithmetic on the belt. If a belt is 40 inches long, a 5% incline lifts the front end about 2 inches above the back. A 10% incline on the same belt lifts it about 4 inches. That's an example, not any pad's spec. The table shows each pad's belt length when the maker states it.

What to look at on an incline walking pad

The table uses the same columns as every walking pad page. Blank means the maker doesn't state it. Max user weight, safety key or auto-stop and intended use are never blank: if the maker gives nothing, they say "Not stated by the maker".

Max user weight with the deck tilted

Max user weight is the maker's stated limit, in pounds. When a maker states only kilograms, the table converts with NIST's factor of 0.4535924 kg per pound and keeps the original unit in view. Check whether the manual gives a separate rule for incline use. Some makers do, and the manual wins over the listing. Stay within the limit the maker states.

Deck height goes up with incline

Height in the table is the deck height when the pad is flat. Raise the incline, and the front of the deck goes up too. On a desk setup, that matters. You stand a little higher at the front of the belt, which is where you walk when you're working.

Work it out the same way as for any desk pad. Find your comfortable standing desk height, add the flat deck height from the table, then add the extra the incline adds at the front. Your desk has to rise that far. The standing desk height calculator handles the first part of that sum.

Incline also changes storage. A pad with flip-down feet or a raised front end may not slide under a sofa as easily as a flat one. Check the maker's dimensions, and look for a stated flat or storage height.

Top speed and the belt

Top speed is the fastest the belt goes, in mph. With incline, you'll probably walk slower than you would flat. That's fine. A pad's top speed matters less here than its low, steady settings. Some listings state speed in km/h; NIST sets 1 mph at exactly 1.609344 km/h, so the km/h figure is always the bigger number.

Belt or walking area is the moving surface, length by width in inches, when stated. On a slope, a longer belt gives your stride more room so you don't end up near the back edge.

Handle: worth a look on an incline pad

Handle is none, a fold-down handlebar, a fixed handrail or a removable handle, as stated. On a sloped deck, a bar within reach is something many people want. If you'll walk on incline away from a desk, look at walking pads with handles. If the pad goes under a desk, a handle has to fold flat or come off.

Product weight and moving it

Product weight comes from the maker, not from the shipping box, and it's blank when the maker doesn't state it. An incline mechanism can add weight, and a pad with a raised front end can be awkward to tip onto its wheels. If the pad has to move every evening, check the weight and where the wheels are before you think about the slope. (My spreadsheet has a column for "can one person move this". The answer is never a plain yes or no. It's a range.)

Noise, controls and display

Noise appears as a decibel (dB) figure only when the maker states one. An incline motor is a second motor, and listings rarely say how loud it is. "Quiet" with no number gets no number from us.

Controls names the remote and app as the maker does. For automatic incline, check that the remote or app controls the incline, not just the speed. Display lists what the screen tracks: time, speed, distance, steps, sometimes calories. Those readouts are the machine's estimates. We list what it shows, never the numbers.

Safety key and auto-stop

A safety key clips to your clothes and stops the belt if you step back too far. Some pads state an auto-stop when you step off; some have a stop button. On a slope, stepping back is easier to do by accident. If the maker states nothing, the table says "Not stated by the maker".

Flat walking pad or incline walking pad

A flat walking pad is simpler, lower and slides under furniture more easily. An incline pad adds a slope, and sometimes a motor and some height. Here's how to pick:

• Flat, if you'll walk slowly at a desk and want the lowest deck.
• Fixed incline, if you want a slight slope all the time and nothing to adjust.
• Manual incline, if you'll pick one slope and keep it for weeks.
• Automatic incline, if you want to change the slope during a walk, like walking up and down a street.

A pad with incline still isn't a running machine. If you want steep hills at running speeds, you're looking at a full-size treadmill, and this site doesn't cover those.

Setting up an incline pad at home

Margo's ruling, delivered from the back stairway: "If it tilts, it goes on a level floor first." She's right. The incline should come from the machine, not from a sloping floorboard.

• Level spot, dense mat. A mat helps protect the floor and keeps the pad from creeping on a slope.
• Clear floor behind the belt. Nothing where your feet come off the end.
• Cord along the wall. Not across the path, not under a rug.
• Start flat. Get used to the speed first, then add incline in small steps.
• Lower it before you stop. Return to flat at the end, so the next start is on a level deck.
• Unplug when you're done. And put the key away.

Kids and pets near a tilted deck

The safety line on this page asks you to keep kids and pets away from moving parts. Here's why that matters for any treadmill. In a 2022 letter to the group that writes the voluntary treadmill standard, CPSC staff described hazards from children and objects being pulled under the rear roller of an operating treadmill. An incline raises the front, but the rear roller stays near the floor, right where a small hand or a curious pet can reach.

Keep the area behind the belt clear while it runs, stop the belt if someone small comes into the room, and store a removable key away from the machine. Before you buy, look up the brand and model on the CPSC recalls and warnings page.

Who should skip a walking pad with incline

Skip it if your desk barely clears a flat pad already; the incline adds height. Skip it if the pad has to slide under a low sofa and the maker's storage height is taller than the gap. Skip it if you'll never change the slope. A flat walking pad does the same job with fewer parts.
