Folding Treadmills: Compact Models for Small Spaces

A folding treadmill is a compact treadmill that folds away

A folding treadmill is a treadmill built to get out of the way. When you're done walking, it folds, and you roll it into a closet, under a bed or against a wall. On this site, that means compact treadmills and walking pads whose maker states that they fold for storage.

Full-size treadmills aren't covered here, even the ones that fold. They're running machines with long decks and console towers, and they need a room of their own. This page is for the compact end: a machine for walking or, where the maker says so, light jogging, in a home where floor space is shared with everything else.

Step count: my closet already holds a hockey bag that smells like a hockey bag. Anything else that goes in there has to earn its spot with a folded size I can check.

Three ways compact treadmills fold

Makers fold compact treadmills in three main ways. The listing usually says which, and the photos usually show it.

• Folds in half. The deck has a hinge in the middle. Folded, the machine is about half as long, and thicker.
• Handle folds flat. The deck stays flat and the handle or rail folds down onto it. The machine stays the same length, but gets low enough to slide under furniture.
• Flips up on its end. The whole deck tilts up to stand on end, or leans against a wall, on wheels at the base.

Some machines combine these, like a handle that folds flat on a deck that also stands up. The folds column in our table says yes only when the maker states the machine folds. A flat walking pad that slides under a sofa without folding is a different thing. We keep the maker's word for it, and it lives on the walking pads page.

"Portable", "compact", "mini" and "small" are not specs

Listings use plenty of size words: portable treadmill, compact treadmill, mini treadmill, small treadmill. None of them is a measurement. "Portable" often means wheels. "Mini" can mean almost anything.

The numbers that tell you the size are in the table: dimensions as stated by the maker, and product weight. Ignore the adjective. Read the inches.

Measure where it'll live folded

Here's my one opinion for this page: measure the storage spot before you look at a single listing. A folding treadmill spends most of its day folded, so its folded size is the number that decides whether it fits your home.

Take these three measurements:

1. The storage spot. Closet floor, under the bed, beside the sofa or against a wall. Width, depth and height, including any door frame you have to roll it through.
2. The walking spot. The floor where you'll unfold it, plus clear floor behind the belt.
3. The path between them. Turns, doorways and rugs the wheels have to cross.

Then compare with the maker's dimensions. Our table shows dimensions as stated by the maker, never the shipping box. When a maker lists both the unfolded and folded size, check the folded one against your storage spot. When only one size is listed, it's usually the unfolded size, and you'll need the manual for the rest.

What to look at on a folding treadmill listing

The table uses the same columns as every walking pad and treadmill page here. Blank means the maker doesn't state it. Three columns are never blank: max user weight, safety key or auto-stop and intended use. If the maker gives nothing, they say "Not stated by the maker".

Max user weight and top speed

Max user weight is the maker's stated limit for the person on the belt, in pounds. When a maker states only kilograms, the table converts with NIST's factor of 0.4535924 kg per pound and keeps the original unit in view. If no limit is stated, the cell says so. Stay within the limit the maker states.

Top speed is the fastest the belt goes, in mph. Compact folding models with a raised handle often list higher top speeds than flat walking-only pads. Some listings state speed in km/h. NIST puts 1 mph at exactly 1.609344 km/h, so the km/h number is always the bigger one. The treadmill speed chart helps you see what a given mph means as a pace.

Intended use: walking, light jogging or home use

Intended use is the maker's own wording, shown word for word: "for home use", "indoor use only", "walking and light jogging". On compact folding treadmills, this column tells you more than the top speed does. A high top speed on a machine the maker states is for walking doesn't make it a running machine.

Product weight and wheels

Product weight comes from the maker, not the shipping weight. On a folding treadmill you'll move every day, it matters as much as the folded size. Many compact models have wheels at one end, so you tip and roll rather than lift. Check where the wheels are relative to the fold, and whether the maker says the machine rolls when folded.

Handle, deck height and belt

Handle is one of none, a fold-down handlebar, a fixed handrail or a removable handle, as stated. On a folding treadmill, the handle is often what folds. See walking pads with handles for flat pads with a fold-up bar.

Height is the deck height when flat, with the handle-up height shown separately on models with a handle. If you'll use the machine at a standing desk, add the deck height to your desk height. Our under desk treadmills page covers that setup.

Belt or walking area is the moving surface, length by width in inches, when the maker states it. A fold-in-half deck can still give a full-length belt when open. Don't confuse the belt size with the folded size.

Incline, noise, controls and display

Incline shows only when the maker states it, as a percent or levels. Many compact folding models stay flat. Noise is a decibel (dB) figure only when stated; "quiet" with no number gets no number from us. Controls names the remote, app or buttons, as the maker does. Display lists what the screen tracks, such as time, speed, distance, steps or calories. Those readouts are the machine's estimates. We list what it shows, never the numbers.

Safety key and auto-stop

A safety key clips to your clothes and stops the belt if you step back too far. Some models state an auto-stop when you step off; some have a stop button. If the maker states nothing about any of these, the table says "Not stated by the maker".

Folding treadmill or flat walking pad

Both suit small spaces. The difference is how they get out of the way.

• Flat walking pad. Slides under a sofa or bed. Low and simple. Usually no handle.
• Folding pad with a fold-flat handle. Same flat storage, with a bar you can raise for faster walking.
• Fold-in-half treadmill. Shorter when stored. Thicker, so it needs a closet or a corner, not the gap under a sofa.
• Upright-folding treadmill. Takes the least floor space when stored. Needs wall space and a manual that says it can stand that way.

If you have a tall gap under a sofa or bed, a flat pad is the easiest. If you have a closet and no gap, look at fold-in-half models. If you have one bare wall, an upright fold may be it. Rosa says anything in the duplex that folds eventually ends up in Margo's linen closet. I'd like to see her try with this.

Folding, unfolding and storing it

The fold is a moving part, and moving parts deserve a minute with the manual.

• Unplug before folding. And before unfolding.
• Fold the way the manual says. Check how the fold locks, and that it's locked before you roll it.
• Store it as stated. Flat, upright or on its side, only as the maker says.
• Keep the storage spot clear. Nothing leaning on a folded machine.
• Unfold on a level spot with a mat. Clear floor behind the belt, cord along the wall.

Belt care is the same as on any walking pad. Many makers ask you to lubricate it on a schedule; the guide on how to lubricate a walking pad covers the general steps, and the maker's manual comes first.

In a St. Paul snow emergency, you move your car or it gets towed. A folding treadmill is easier. You just roll it back into the closet, and nobody writes you a ticket.

Kids, pets and a machine that folds

The safety line on this page asks you to keep kids and pets away from moving parts. Here's why that matters for any treadmill. In a 2022 letter to the group that writes the voluntary treadmill standard, CPSC staff described hazards from children and objects being pulled under the rear roller of an operating treadmill. In a 2021 treadmill recall notice, CPSC also advised storing the safety key away from the machine and out of reach of children when it isn't in use.

A folding machine adds a hinge. Fold and unfold it with nobody small nearby, and store it where little hands can't reach the belt or the joint. Before you buy, look up the brand and model on the CPSC recalls and warnings page.

Who should skip a folding treadmill

Skip it if you have a spot where a machine can stay out all the time. A flat walking pad or a fixed machine is less to fold. Skip it if you want to run regularly; compact folding models aren't running treadmills, and full-size ones aren't covered here.

Skip it, too, if the maker doesn't state a folded size and you can't find it in the manual. You'd be guessing whether it fits the one spot that matters. The Home Fitness page has steppers and seated pedal machines that need even less room.
