Under Desk Treadmills: How to Fit One Under Your Desk

An under desk treadmill is a flat, low walking pad made to slide under a standing desk, with no handle or a handle that folds flat. It suits people who already stand to work and want to walk slowly through email and calls. The main choice is fit: the space between your desk legs, how far your desk rises and the maker's max user weight. I'm Dev. I work from the upstairs unit of the duplex, and my desk is where my day happens.

Raised standing desk with a laptop and headset, a flat walking pad fitted between the desk legs and clear floor behind it.

What’s in this listPads made to slide under a desk — no handle, or a handle that folds flat — as the maker describes them. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

An under desk treadmill is a walking pad sized for your desk

An under desk treadmill is a low, flat treadmill made to sit under a standing desk while you work. No console tower and no rail in the way. Either there's no handle at all, or the handle folds flat so the desktop can sit over the deck. That's the rule for this page: the maker describes the pad as made for under a desk, and nothing sticks up where your desk has to be.

It's the same family as the walking pad. The difference is the job. A walking pad might live in front of the TV. An under desk treadmill lives where your keyboard is, and that changes which specs matter.

Step count: walking at a desk is slow walking. You're typing, reading and talking. Nobody is setting speed records during a budget review. (I'd know. I lead a support team. Our standup has never once been described as "fast-paced".)

Measure your desk before you look at any pad

Most problems with an under desk treadmill are desk problems. Take three measurements before you shop:

  1. Width between the desk legs. The pad has to fit between them, with a little room to spare. Measure at floor level and check for a crossbar or feet that stick in.
  2. Depth under the desk. Measure from the front edge of the desk to the wall or the back crossbar. The front of the pad sits under the desk; the rest sticks out behind you.
  3. Top height of the desk. The highest your standing desk goes. You'll need it in a minute.

Then compare with the table. Dimensions there are the maker's figures for the pad itself, not the shipping box. Width is the one that decides whether it slides between the legs.

Deck height changes your desk height

A pad raises you by its deck height, which the table shows as the height when flat. So your desk has to rise by that much more than your usual standing height.

Here's the math. Stand in your work shoes and find the desk height where typing feels comfortable. Add the deck height from the table. If your desk can't reach the total, the pad will put your keyboard too low. The standing desk height calculator does the addition.

Handle: none, or one that folds flat

A fixed rail and a desk can't share the same space. That's why this page only includes pads with no handle or a handle the maker says folds flat. The table shows handle as one of: none, a fold-down handlebar, a fixed handrail or a removable handle. A fold-down bar is fine here as long as you leave it down while the pad is under the desk.

If you want a pad you can also use away from the desk with the handle up, look at walking pads with handles.

What to look at on an under desk treadmill

The table uses the same columns for every pad. Blank means the maker doesn't state it. Three columns are never blank: max user weight, safety key or auto-stop and intended use. If the maker gives nothing, they say "Not stated by the maker".

Max user weight and top speed first

This is my one opinion here: check the max user weight and the top speed before anything else. Those two fields decide whether the pad fits you and your pace.

Max user weight is the maker's stated limit, in pounds. When a maker gives only kilograms, the table converts with NIST's factor of 0.4535924 kg per pound. If there's no limit stated, the cell says so.

Top speed is the fastest the belt goes, in mph. Under a desk, the low end of the range matters more than the top. What you want is a slow, steady setting that lets you type. Some listings state speed in km/h; NIST puts 1 mph at exactly 1.609344 km/h, so check which unit you're reading.

Noise matters more at a desk

If you take calls at the desk, the pad is in every one of them. Noise shows up as a decibel (dB) figure only when the maker states one. "Quiet" with no number gets no number from us. The quiet walking pads page lists only pads with a stated dB figure.

A stated dB figure is a starting point. Your speed, your floor and what's under the pad all change what a microphone picks up. A mat under the pad helps protect the floor and can soften vibration. I still keep my finger near the mute button when I walk on calls. My most-used feature at work isn't a feature of any treadmill. It's mute.

Controls you can reach while walking

Controls covers the remote and the app, as the maker names them. At a desk, the controls have to be reachable without stopping. A remote on the desktop works. An app on the phone next to your keyboard works. Buttons down on the frame mean bending over a moving belt, which is not what you want during a meeting.

Display is the screen and what it tracks: time, speed, distance, steps, sometimes calories. On an under desk treadmill, a display on the deck can end up hidden under the desktop. Many makers put the readout in the app or on the remote instead. Those readouts are the machine's estimates. We list what the display shows, never the numbers.

Belt size and your stride

Belt or walking area is the moving surface, length by width in inches, when the maker states it. At a desk you walk slowly, with short steps, close to the front of the belt. You don't need as much belt as you would for brisk walking. You do need enough width that you're not watching your feet instead of your screen.

Safety key and auto-stop

A safety key clips to your clothes and stops the belt if you drift back too far. Some pads say they stop on their own when you step off. Some have a stop button.

At a desk you're paying attention to your screen, not your feet. That's the reason this field is required. If the maker states nothing about a key, clip, button or auto-stop, the table says "Not stated by the maker".

Under desk treadmills for the office and for home

For a home office, the questions are the ones above: desk width, desk height, floor and cords. You also need a plan for where the pad goes after work. Many pads have wheels at one end and slide under a sofa or bed. Check the product weight in the table if you'll move it every day.

For an office at work, ask before you bring one in. Offices often have rules about personal electrical equipment and where cords can run. Coworkers will hear the motor and the footsteps. And read the maker's intended use: some pads are stated for home use, and the table shows that wording when the maker gives it.

If you want a desk and a treadmill sold together as one set, that's a different type. See treadmill desks.

Walking pad vs under desk treadmill

They're mostly the same machine with different labels. Both are low and flat, both are made for walking, and both slide away when you're done.

The difference on this site is the rule. A pad goes on this page only when the maker describes it as made to go under a desk, with no handle or a fold-flat handle. The walking pads page is broader: it also covers 2 in 1 pads with a raised handle and compact models built for the living room.

If you'll only ever walk at your desk, start here. If you might walk faster away from the desk, start on the walking pads page.

Set it up so the desk and the pad get along

A few setup notes from someone whose desk is his whole workday:

Care is mostly the belt: many makers ask you to lubricate it on a schedule. The guide on how to lubricate a walking pad covers the general steps. The maker's manual wins.

Rosa, who calls my bedtime "the overnight shift I retired from", asked if I walk at night too. No. The pad goes under the couch at the end of my workday, and the last light on in the duplex is just a lamp.

Kids, pets and the space behind the belt

The page's safety line covers the basics. Here's the reason for the kids-and-pets part. In a 2022 letter to the group that writes the voluntary treadmill standard, CPSC staff described hazards from children and objects being pulled under the rear roller of an operating treadmill. In a 2021 treadmill recall notice, CPSC also advised keeping all objects, including exercise balls and other equipment, away from the treadmill, and storing the safety key away from the machine and out of reach of children when it isn't in use.

Under a desk, the back of the belt points into the room, where a dog or a small child can walk up behind you while you're looking at your screen. If someone small is in the room, stop the belt. Before you buy, look up the brand and model on the CPSC recalls and warnings page.

Who should skip an under desk treadmill

Skip it if your desk doesn't stand, or stands but can't rise by the pad's deck height. Skip it if the space between your desk legs is narrower than any pad you'd want. Skip it if the back of the belt would end up against a wall, a door or a bookcase.

Skip it, too, if you'd rather take your calls on a walk outside. The CDC's page on adult activity says "move more, sit less" and that some physical activity is better than none. A treadmill under the desk is one way to do that, not the only one.

If it does fit, the work-from-home setup page covers the rest of the desk, and the Home Fitness page shows the seated options if standing all day isn't for you.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a walking pad and an under desk treadmill?

Mostly the marketing. Both are low, flat treadmills made for walking. An under desk treadmill is a walking pad sold for desk use, with no handle or one that folds flat so it fits under the desktop. On this site, a pad goes on this page only when the maker describes it that way.

Can I use an under desk treadmill in an office?

Physically, if it fits under the desk and there's an outlet nearby. Practically, ask first. Many offices have rules about personal electrical equipment, and coworkers below you or next to you will hear it. Check the maker's intended use, too: some state home use only.

How fast should I walk at an under desk treadmill?

Slow enough to type and talk without holding the desk. That's a lot slower than a brisk outdoor walk for most people. Start at the pad's lowest setting and raise it a little at a time. The table shows the maker's top speed in mph, but under a desk you'll rarely need it.

Do I need a standing desk for an under desk treadmill?

In practice, yes. The pad raises you by its deck height, so a fixed-height sitting desk ends up far too low. You need a desk that rises to your standing height plus the deck height. The standing desk height calculator adds those two numbers for you.

Is an under desk treadmill good for working from home?

It's good if you stand to work and want to walk during the quiet parts of the day. It's not good if your desk can't rise high enough, if your room has no clear floor behind the desk or if you'd rather walk outside between calls. Fit and safety come before anything else.
