Heated Blankets

A heated blanket is a regular blanket with thin heating wires sewn inside and a plug-in controller. Choose it in this order: a stated auto shut-off, a stated safety listing (ETL or UL), the maker's warnings, then size and fabric. Softness comes last. (Margo has said this at Thursday soup more than once. Dev still asks about the fabric first.)

A heated blanket laid flat on a made bed, its cord running to the wall away from the pillows and the controller on the nightstand.

What’s in this listHeated blankets, throws and mattress pads. Auto shut-off, safety listing (ETL / UL) and the maker's warnings are always shown; "Not stated by the maker" means the listing and the maker's page don't give it. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

A heated blanket is a blanket with a controller

A heated blanket, also sold as an electric blanket, has insulated heating wires running through it. A controller on a cord sets the heat. The cord plugs into the blanket at one end and the wall at the other. Most blankets let you unplug the cord from the blanket, which is what makes washing possible.

You'll see three shapes under the same name: bed-size blankets, smaller heated throws for the couch, and heated mattress pads that go under the sheet. Some listings add wearable heated blankets with a cord. The table covers all of them, and the product type field tells you which is which.

Here's the rule I use for anything with a plug in the bedroom. First, read what the maker states about safety. Then read the care tag. Then think about color.

What to look at in the table

The table is built from the maker's listing and the maker's own pages. Three rows always show, even when they're empty: auto shut-off, safety listing and the maker's warnings. "Not stated by the maker" means neither the listing nor the maker's page gives that information. It doesn't mean the feature is missing. It means nobody wrote it down where a buyer can read it, and that's worth knowing before you buy.

Auto shut-off is the first row to read

Auto shut-off turns the blanket off after a set time. Makers state it in hours, such as "10 hours", or as a range you choose, such as "1–8 hours selectable". The table copies the stated timer as written.

A shut-off you can't confirm is a shut-off you can't count on. A store tag that just says "auto shut-off" without a time isn't enough for us, so the table doesn't treat it as stated. If you fall asleep easily, a shorter timer you can choose is worth more than a long fixed one. If you only warm the bed before you get in, any stated timer works as a backup.

The safety listing means a lab checked it

ETL and UL are certification marks. Intertek, the lab behind the ETL mark, describes marks like ETL, UL and CSA this way: a qualified, independent lab tested the product and certified that it meets national safety standards, and the product stays in an ongoing inspection program.

So the mark is about the electrical design and how the factory keeps making it, not about softness or warmth. We show the exact mark the maker states, such as "ETL listed" or "UL listed". We never guess it from the brand name. And FCC isn't a safety listing. It's about radio interference from electronics, and it can sit on the same label without meaning the same thing.

The maker's warnings tell you who it's for

Every electric blanket comes with warnings in the manual. The table has a row for them, quoted as the maker states them. They usually say who shouldn't use the blanket and how not to use it. Common topics: babies and young children, people who can't feel heat well, people who can't work the controls, pets, and folding or bunching while it's on.

When a listing doesn't publish its warnings, the row says "Not stated by the maker". In that case, ask for the manual before you buy, or choose a model whose maker publishes it. A blanket you can't read the instructions for is a blanket you're guessing about.

Heat settings and preheat are comfort features

Heat settings are the number of levels on the controller, as stated: 4, 6, 10 and so on. More settings mean smaller steps between them, not more heat. Two blankets with 10 settings can feel very different at setting 5.

Preheat is a mode that runs warmer for a short time to warm the bed, then drops back. Not every maker offers it or says how long it lasts. The table shows it when the listing states it.

Dual controls split a big bed in two

Queen and king blankets and pads sometimes come with two controllers, one for each side. That's the fix for two people who disagree about warmth. (I live in a duplex with one thermostat. I know about disagreements.) The dual control row shows it only when the listing says the blanket has two controllers.

Fabric is the last thing to choose

Heated blanket fabrics include flannel, microplush and sherpa, a fleece that looks like sheep's wool. Some throws pair faux fur with a sherpa back. The fabric decides how it feels on your skin and how it washes. It doesn't change the safety rows above. A soft blanket with no stated shut-off is still a blanket with no stated shut-off.

Sizes: match the bed, then check the label

A bed-size heated blanket is sized to a mattress: twin, full, queen, king or California king. The Better Sleep Council lists a queen mattress at 60 x 80 inches and a king at 76 x 80 inches. A blanket needs to be bigger than that to reach over the sides.

US labeling rules say blankets and throws must state the finished length and width on the package, plus the mattress size they're made for when they're sized to one. That's the number to compare. If you want to check how far a given blanket hangs over your mattress, run its finished size through the bedding size guide.

For heated mattress pads, the deciding number is mattress depth. Makers state it as "fits mattresses up to" a number of inches. Measure your mattress with any topper on it before you order.

Heated throws are smaller and sized for a couch or a chair, with the finished size stated on the label the same way. They have their own page: heated throws.

Bed blanket, throw or mattress pad?

Each shape suits a different habit.

My one opinion on this page, and the reason you can check: buy for the stated auto shut-off and safety listing first, softness second. Those two rows are the only parts of a heated blanket a lab or the maker has put in writing about safety. Everything about softness is a description.

How to use one the way the makers intend

The template adds the standard safety lines at the end of this page. Here's the reasoning behind them, in plain words.

Keep it flat. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's home electrical checklist says to never fold an electric blanket while it's in use, because a folded blanket may overheat. Spread it out flat.

Don't tuck the wires. The same checklist says that if a blanket is tucked in with the heating wires bent around the mattress corners, you should untuck it. Pinched wires can be damaged, and damaged wires are a fire risk.

Nothing on top while it's on. The CPSC checklist says that when an electric blanket is covered by anything, including other blankets or pets, it may overheat. If you're not sure what your blanket's instructions allow, don't put even a light bedspread on top while it's running.

Look it over every season. The checklist says to look for cracks or breaks in wiring, plugs and connectors, and for dark, charred or frayed spots on either side. If you find any, the CPSC says to throw the blanket away.

Not for babies, young children or anyone who can't work the controls. A heated blanket needs someone who can feel when it's too warm and turn it down or off. Makers' warnings cover this, and so does the standard line below.

Check for recalls. The CPSC posts recalls of heated blankets and throws, and some recalls involve products sold online. A July 2026 recall of heated sherpa throws and blankets, for example, told owners to stop using them right away because of fire and burn hazards. Search the brand and model number on the CPSC recalls page before you buy and once a year after.

Washing and storing a heated blanket

Housekeeping rule: the controller never goes in the washer. Unplug it from the blanket first. Water temperature, cycle and drying differ by maker, so read the care tag and the manual, not my memory of someone else's.

The table shows "machine washable" only when the listing states it. A heated blanket the maker says to spot clean only is a blanket you'll spot clean for its whole life. That's fine if it lives on a guest bed. It's harder on a blanket you use every night.

For storage, I keep heated blankets loosely rolled in the archive, never squashed under the stack of wool blankets. Stored that way, the wires don't sit bent at one sharp fold all summer. Then I check it over before the first cold night, the way the CPSC checklist describes.

Who should skip a heated blanket

If that's you, look at throw blankets, comforters or a heavier fabric instead. A blanket without a plug asks nothing of you.

Brands and related pages

The brands in the table link to their own pages, and the brand catalog lists every bedding brand we cover. Every brand is listed the same way, and the order in the table follows the data, not a preference.

Questions people ask

Is a heated blanket the same as an electric blanket?

Yes. Both names mean a blanket with heating wires inside and a controller on a cord. Listings use either word, and a heated throw is the same idea in a smaller couch size. A heated mattress pad is different: it goes under your sheet, on top of the mattress, so you lie on it instead of under it.

Can you sleep with a heated blanket on all night?

That depends on the maker's instructions and the auto shut-off. Many controllers turn the blanket off after a set number of hours, and the table shows that time only when the maker states it. If the maker's manual says not to use it while sleeping, or gives no shut-off time, follow the manual. A common habit is to warm the bed first, then turn it off.

Can you wash a heated blanket?

Many can be machine washed once the controller and cord are unplugged from the blanket, but only if the maker says so. Follow the care tag and the manual for water temperature, cycle and drying. Never put the controller in water. The table shows machine washable only when the listing states it.

What does ETL or UL mean on a heated blanket?

ETL and UL are safety certification marks from independent testing labs. They mean a lab tested the product to a safety standard and keeps checking that production still meets it. We list the mark only as the maker states it. FCC is a different mark about radio interference, not a safety listing.

Do heated blankets work with a mattress pad or another blanket on top?

Don't pile things on top of a heated blanket that's switched on. The CPSC's home electrical checklist says anything covering an electric blanket in use, including other blankets or pets, can make it overheat. A heated mattress pad is a separate product made to sit under the sheet; follow its own instructions.
