Alaska Bear Sleep Masks, Silk Pillowcases and More

Alaska Bear is mostly a sleep mask brand: flat silk masks, contoured 3D masks with eye cups, a cotton 3-pack and weighted masks, plus mulberry silk pillowcases, silk scrunchies and a Bluetooth sleep headband. Pick the mask type first, then read the fiber line. I'm Rosa. I've worn a sleep mask since the overnight show, and I've learned that the shape matters more than the shine.

What Alaska Bear makes

Alaska Bear sells sleep accessories, and most of them go over your eyes. On Amazon US the lineup looks like this:

A lot of the listings are bundles, two masks or a mask with a pillowcase, sold as their own product. That's why the grid above has more cards than there are mask designs. If two cards look alike, read the title for "bundle" and the color pairing.

Every in-scope listing we checked on Amazon US was sold by Alaska Bear. There are no bonnets or sleep caps from the brand in our data, apart from a cap included in one pillowcase set.

The mask types, and why the type matters first

Here's what helps. Before you read any fabric claim, decide which kind of mask you want. The kind decides how it sits on your face. The fabric decides how it feels.

My opinion for this page: darkness is the cheapest thing in a bedroom, and a contoured mask that doesn't press on your eyes beats a pretty flat one. The reason is a field you can check. The contoured cups field tells you which masks keep the fabric off your eyes.

Lineup notes

Flat silk masks: the 2-strap mask and the Blossom Almond mask

The 2-strap mask states mulberry silk and twin adjustable elastic straps, the kind meant to stay put when you turn your head. The title also mentions a nose baffle, a small flap that blocks light at the bottom edge. The Blossom Almond mask states mulberry silk and a flat design.

A few more flat masks are sold as bundles of two: the organic silk mask in black with a star print, and two silk-covered headband masks paired in black and pink. Our data lists them as flat silk / satin masks without a fiber line, so I won't call them silk on this page. Read the fiber line on the listing.

The silk eye cover with a shaped pad

This one is listed as a flat silk / satin mask that is machine washable. Its title talks about a shaped pad and a foam insert. Our data keeps it in the flat group because that's how its type is stated. If you can't decide between flat and contoured, read this listing closely.

Contoured 3D masks: cups that keep off your lashes

The Deep Contoured Eye Cups mask states contoured cups, machine washable, "100% Light Blockage" in the maker's words, and that it "won't rub against your eye balls or eyelashes". The Airplane Pillow Mask states contoured cups, an adjustable elastic strap, "100% Blackout" and "Lash extension wearers friendly", again in the listing's words.

There are four more contoured bundles: three headband style contoured 3D masks (adjustable and non-adjustable versions, printed versions) and a contoured 3D pair in black and blue. All state contoured cups. The Classic Silk Eye Mask Bundle is listed as a flat silk / satin mask that also states cup-shaped contoured cups, so it sits between the two groups.

Blackout claims are the maker's wording, not a measurement. Every mask leaks a little light at the nose for some faces. The fit at the bridge of your nose decides more than the claim.

The cotton 3-pack

The 3 Pack of masks states cotton, a standard flat shape, "100% Light Blocking" in the listing's words, and machine wash in a laundry bag on a delicate cycle. Three masks means one in the wash, one by the bed and one in the travel bag. It's the practical option if silk care sounds like a chore.

Weighted masks

The Cooling Gel Eye Mask Weighted set comes as a 2-pack, viscose on one side and plush on the other. It states it can be warmed in the microwave and has a gel insert that can be frozen. The Weighted Silk Sleep Mask with Contoured Eye Cups combines weight with cups and states it "won't rub against your eye balls or eyelashes".

Follow the maker's heating and cooling instructions to the letter, and test the temperature on your wrist before it goes near your eyes. A mask that's too hot or too cold isn't a better mask. If you have an eye condition, ask your doctor before using pressure or heat on your eyes.

Mulberry silk pillowcases

The pillowcases are where the silk numbers show up. As listed on Amazon:

Two more listings pair a silk mask with a queen pillowcase. Momme is a weight measure for silk; a higher number means denser fabric. The 6A grade and the OEKO-TEX line are as listed on Amazon, and we don't have a certificate number. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 labels carry a number you can check in the OEKO-TEX Label Check, which confirms whether a certificate is valid. If a certification matters to you, look for that number on the product.

Envelope or zipper? An envelope closure tucks the pillow in with a fold, no hardware. A zipper closes tighter. Neither changes the silk. Night-shift note: I like an envelope, because a zipper at 4 a.m. is the loudest thing in the room.

Silk scrunchies

The scrunchies come in a 3-pack, stated as mulberry silk at 19 momme. A silk scrunchie is a gentler hair tie for sleeping than a plain elastic band, and that's about all it needs to be.

The Bluetooth sleep headband

The sleep headband is a soft band with thin speakers inside, stated as Bluetooth 5.2. It doubles as a light-blocking band over the eyes. Keep the volume low enough that you can still hear a smoke alarm, charge it away from the bed, and follow the maker's instructions on where the battery sits. More options are on the sleep headphones page.

How to choose within Alaska Bear

  1. Pick the mask type. Flat for light and packable, contoured if you hate pressure on your lids or wear lash extensions, weighted if you like pressure.
  2. Check the strap. Adjustable elastic, a headband style, or two straps for side sleepers who move.
  3. Read the fiber line. Mulberry silk only where stated; cotton if you want easy washing.
  4. Read the care line. Machine wash is stated on only some masks.
  5. For pillowcases, check momme and size. Match the case to the pillow size, not the bed size.

If you sleep on your side, a slim flat mask or a headband style usually presses less against the pillow than a deep-cup mask. If you sleep on your back, either works, and the cups win for lashes.

In June I'm in bed at 8:25 with the sun still up over the alley. Jules calls it my summer daylight shift. The mask doesn't care what time it is, which is the point.

Caring for silk so it stays silk

Silk is a protein fiber, and it asks for gentler care than cotton. Most of the silk listings here don't state care in our data, so the tag on your pillowcase or mask is the rule. A few general habits help:

Turn a silk pillowcase inside out before washing, and wash it on its own or with other silk. Our guide on how to wash a silk pillowcase walks through it step by step.

Contoured masks have foam cups, and foam doesn't love a hot dryer either. The contoured mask that states machine washable in our data still deserves a gentle cycle and air drying. If a mask has a weighted or gel insert, check whether it comes out before washing; the maker's instructions decide.

Dead air on the radio is a problem. Dead air in a bedroom is the goal. A clean mask that still fits is part of getting there.

Head to head

Alaska Bear vs Blissy

Both sell mulberry silk masks and a silk pillowcase on Amazon US. Blissy's listings in our data state 22 momme and 6A on nearly everything, and its bonnets are a big part of its lineup; Alaska Bear has no bonnets in our data. Alaska Bear has the wider mask range, including contoured 3D, cotton and weighted masks, and pillowcases at 19 or 22 momme as listed.

Alaska Bear vs Manta Sleep

Manta Sleep's masks in our data are mostly contoured 3D masks with eye cups and blackout wording, plus a silk mask, a steam mask and a Bluetooth sound mask. Alaska Bear also sells contoured 3D masks and a Bluetooth headband, and adds flat silk masks, a cotton 3-pack, weighted masks and silk pillowcases. Compare the strap and cup fields if fit is the question.

Alaska Bear vs MZOO

MZOO sells contoured 3D masks only in our data, most with memory foam stated and a buckle strap. Alaska Bear's contoured masks are a part of a broader line that also includes flat mulberry silk masks and pillowcases. If you want a foam contoured mask with a buckle, MZOO's listings state it; if you want silk, Alaska Bear's do.

Alaska Bear vs Slip

Slip's lineup in our data leans toward mulberry silk pillowcases, most stating 22 momme, in queen, king and euro sizes, plus flat silk masks. Alaska Bear sells mulberry silk pillowcases too, at 19 or 22 momme as listed, and a wider spread of mask types: contoured, cotton and weighted as well as flat silk.

Alaska Bear vs ZIMASILK

ZIMASILK's listings in our data are mulberry silk masks, flat and one contoured, and silk bonnets, most stating 22 momme and 6A. Alaska Bear has no bonnets in our data but adds pillowcases, scrunchies, cotton and weighted masks and a sleep headband. For a contoured mask with a silk face stated, ZIMASILK lists one.

Questions about ALASKA BEAR

Is Alaska Bear real silk?

Several Alaska Bear listings state mulberry silk: the 2-strap mask, the Blossom Almond mask, the pillowcases and the scrunchies. Some pillowcases also give a momme (19 or 22) and a 6A grade, as listed on Amazon. We show silk only where the listing states it. The cotton 3-pack and the contoured 3D masks aren't sold as silk, and they don't need to be.

How do you wash an Alaska Bear sleep mask?

Follow the listing and the tag for your exact mask. In our data, the silk eye cover with a shaped pad and the deep contoured mask are listed as machine washable, and the cotton 3-pack says machine wash in a laundry bag on a delicate cycle. The other masks don't state care in our data, so read the tag before the first wash.

Where is Alaska Bear made?

Our data doesn't record a country of origin for Alaska Bear products, so we can't say. In the US, the FTC requires textile labels to name the country where a product was made, so the sewn-in label or the listing's details will tell you. The brand's trademarks are registered to an owner in Changsha, Hunan, China, which is a trademark record, not a factory address.

Which Alaska Bear sleep mask is best?

It depends on what bothers you at night. If you want nothing touching your eyelids or lashes, the contoured 3D masks with eye cups are the ones built for that. If you want a light mask that feels like fabric, the flat mulberry silk masks fit. The weighted masks add gentle pressure. We don't rank them; the table lists what each states.

Who owns the Alaska Bear brand?

The ALASKA BEAR trademark for sleep masks, filed in 2015, and the one for bed linen and pillowcases, filed in 2016, are registered to the same individual owner in Changsha, Hunan, China. The sleep mask registration was renewed. On Amazon US, the in-scope listings we checked were sold by Alaska Bear.
