What a contoured sleep mask is

A contoured sleep mask is a sleep mask shaped like two shallow bowls joined at the nose. Each bowl, or cup, sits around one eye. The rim rests on your brow bone above and your cheekbone below, and the middle stays off your eyelid. Listings call the same shape 3D, molded, deep-cup or "zero eye pressure".

Like every sleep mask, its main job is darkness. The NIGMS, part of the NIH, says light and dark have the biggest influence on circadian rhythms, the body's daily clock. What the contour adds is comfort while doing that job: you can blink, your lashes don't brush the fabric, and nothing presses on your eyes all night.

This page keeps only masks with molded eye cups that don't press on the eyes, as the maker describes them.

Why the cups matter

A flat mask lies directly on your eyelids. For many people that's fine. For others it's the reason they give up on masks.

Here's who usually ends up with a contoured mask:

• People who feel pressure on their eyes and wake up to adjust a flat mask.
• People who blink a lot while settling down.
• People with lash extensions or eye makeup they don't want to crush or smudge.
• People who found flat masks warm. The cups leave a small pocket of air in front of the eyes.

That last one isn't a cooling claim. It's just the shape. If a maker says a mask cools, the table shows how only when the maker explains it.

How to read the contoured sleep mask table

Every field shows only when the maker or listing states it. A dash means nobody put it in writing.

Contoured eye cups

This field is yes when the maker describes molded cups, deep eye cups or zero pressure on the eyes. It's the field that put the mask on this page. Mask type says "contoured / 3D" when the maker sells it as that kind of mask; either one is enough.

Material: shell and face

Contoured masks have two parts that matter: the molded shell that holds the shape, often foam, and the fabric over it. The material field shows what the maker states: memory foam, polyester, modal, cotton, silk. A silk face over a foam shell is listed as silk only when the maker says silk. The FTC requires US textile labels to give fibers by generic name and percentage by weight, so the fiber line on the package is where the truth lives.

Strap

Adjustable elastic, hook-and-loop, a buckle or a fixed band. On a contoured mask the strap matters more than on a flat one, because the cups only sit right when the mask is centered. An adjustable strap lets you set it once and forget it. Hook-and-loop can catch hair at the back of your head.

Light blocking

"Blackout" and "100% light blocking" are the maker's words. We don't test them. On a contoured mask, light usually slips in at the nose, where the two cups meet. Look at the photos for a soft flap or a deep cutout there.

Lash wording

Some makers say their mask won't crush lashes or is made for lash extensions. We show that wording only when the maker uses it. The sleep masks for lash extensions page keeps only those masks.

Care, OEKO-TEX and pack count

• Care. Hand wash, machine wash in a bag, or spot clean, as stated. Molded foam often says hand wash.
• OEKO-TEX. Shown only when the maker states it. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 means the textile was tested for harmful substances; certificate numbers can be checked on the OEKO-TEX Label Check.
• Pieces in pack. Some listings include a pouch, spare cups or ear plugs.

Contoured vs flat sleep masks at a glance

If you're choosing between the two basic shapes, here's how they compare.

• Pressure on the eyes. Flat: light pressure on the eyelids. Contoured: none on the eyelids, a little on the brow and cheeks.
• Thickness. Flat: thin. Contoured: thicker, because of the cups.
• Side sleeping. Flat: usually easier. Contoured: fine if slim at the temples.
• Packing. Flat: folds into a pocket. Contoured: better in a pouch or case.
• Washing. Flat: often machine washable. Contoured: often hand wash, because of the molded cups.
• Light at the nose. Both depend on how the nose is cut, not on the shape of the cups.

Neither shape is better for everyone. If you've never minded a flat mask, there's no reason to switch. If you've taken off a flat mask in the middle of the night because it pressed on your eyes, a contoured one is worth trying.

The kinds of contoured masks

"Contoured" covers a few different builds. The listing photos and description usually show which one you're looking at.

One-piece molded masks

A single molded shell with two cups, covered in fabric. These hold their shape well and are the most common kind. They're also the stiffest, so the fit depends on how close the cups match your face.

Adjustable cup masks

Some masks have cups that slide along the strap or attach with hook-and-loop, so you can move them closer together or farther apart. That's useful if your eyes sit wider or closer than average and one-piece masks leave gaps. The maker's description tells you if the cups move.

Soft padded contour masks

Some masks get their shape from thick padded rings sewn around each eye rather than from a molded shell. They're softer and fold more easily for travel, but they can lose some shape after many washes.

Weighted or silk-faced contoured masks

A few contoured masks add weight, or a silk face, or both. A weighted contoured mask puts the pressure on your brow and cheekbones instead of on your eyes. See weighted sleep masks and silk sleep masks for those fields.

Choose a contoured mask by how you sleep

Contoured masks are thicker than flat ones. Your sleep position decides whether that matters.

• Back sleepers. The ideal fit. Nothing pushes the cups sideways, so pick the deepest, most comfortable cups you like.
• Side sleepers. Look for a mask that's slim at the temples, with an adjustable strap. A bulky side presses into your face and shifts the cup off your eye. The sleep masks for side sleepers list focuses on slimmer shapes.
• Stomach sleepers. A contoured mask presses into the pillow face-down. A thin flat mask is the better choice.
• Combination sleepers. Adjustable strap, medium depth, a soft rim. You'll trade a little pressure relief for a mask that survives rolling over.

Dev once borrowed a contoured mask for a nap between calls and wore it upside down through an entire standup. He said it was "fine, mostly". The cups go over your eyes, with the nose cutout at the bottom. (He has since added this to a spreadsheet.)

Fit: the nose, the cups and the strap

A contoured mask fits when three things line up.

• The nose. The bridge of the mask should sit on the bridge of your nose without pressing. A soft nose flap closes the light gap.
• The cups. Each cup should circle one eye, with the rim on bone, not on your eyelid. If one cup touches your eye, the mask is off-center or the spacing doesn't match your face.
• The strap. Snug enough to hold the cups in place, loose enough that it doesn't press the rims into your face. If you see marks on your cheeks in the morning, loosen it a notch.

Try a new mask lying down, not standing up. A mask that feels fine at the mirror can shift once your head is on the pillow.

Care: keep the cups in shape

Molded cups are the part most likely to suffer in the laundry.

• Read the care tag first. Many molded masks say hand wash.
• Hand wash gently in cool water with mild soap, and don't twist or fold the cups.
• Removable covers can go in the wash as the tag says; keep the foam shell out.
• Dry flat, cups up, away from heat. A hot dryer can warp molded foam.
• Store it flat or in its pouch. Crushing a contoured mask in a bag every day flattens the cups over time.

If the cups flatten or crack, the mask turns into a thick flat mask, which defeats the point. That's when to replace it.

Contoured masks for travel

A contoured mask is bulkier than a flat one, but many come with a pouch or a case that keeps the cups from being crushed. On a plane, the shape is handy because the cups don't move when you blink, and you're not sharing an armrest with your own eyelids. Pack it on top, not under the shoes. Who should skip a contoured sleep mask

The cups solve one problem. If you don't have that problem, a contoured mask is just a thicker mask.

• You like a flat mask and don't notice any pressure. Keep it.
• You sleep on your stomach. The cups press into the pillow.
• You want the thinnest mask for a tight travel bag.
• Your eye doctor has told you not to wear anything over your eyes, or to avoid pressure around them.
• Your room is already dark. No mask needed.
