Pillows · Best-of list
The best pillow is the one whose height and firmness fit the way you sleep, so this list is built to give you a real choice, not one winner. I kept one pillow per brand and no more than two per fill, and every pick states both its fill and its firmness. Anything vague about either stayed off the list. (I spent 22 years making hotel beds. Vague pillows were never my favorite guests.)

How this list is builtOne pick per brand and at most two per fill, so the list spans memory foam, down, latex, buckwheat and more. Every pick states its fill and firmness; pillows without both are left out.

Every pillow below had to pass two checks before I'd look at anything else. The maker or the listing had to state the fill, and it had to state the firmness. A pillow that says "premium" where the fill should be didn't make it. Neither did one that calls itself "just right" instead of soft, medium or firm.
Then I set two limits so the list would be useful to more than one kind of sleeper:
The result spans nine fills and the whole firmness range, from soft and plush to firm. That's on purpose. A list of the twelve best-known memory foam pillows would help a side sleeper who likes foam and nobody else.
The table above shows each pick's fill, firmness, size and sleep position as stated. The short verdict under each one says who it fits and who should skip it, from that pillow's own specs. No price appears anywhere. Every row has a "Check price" button instead.
Here's my one opinion on this page, and you can check it against the table: buy for your sleep position first and your fill second. Position decides how much height you need. Fill decides how that height feels, how heavy the pillow is and how you wash it. The firmness and loft fields tell you more than the word "supportive" ever will.
The Better Sleep Council puts the positions this way. Stomach sleepers should use a very soft pillow or none at all, so the neck isn't at an awkward angle. Side sleepers can add a pillow between the knees for the hips and lower back. Back sleepers can tuck a soft pillow or rolled towel under the knees. The head pillow follows from that.
Side sleeping leaves the biggest gap between your ear and the mattress, so it usually wants the firmest, tallest pillow. In this list, the Brooklinen Down Pillow and the C CUSHION LAB cervical pillow are the two whose listings name side sleepers, and both are firm. The Beckham Hotel Collection pillow is the only pick with a stated loft, 8 inches, and its listing says it suits all positions. For a longer list built only for this, see the best pillows for side sleepers.
On your back, the pillow fills the curve of your neck without pushing your chin forward. The Casper Down Pillow is the pick whose listing names back sleepers, and it's soft. Several medium-firm and medium-soft picks are listed for all positions and can work here too.
Stomach sleepers need the least height. The Acanva Basic Bed Pillow is the pick whose listing names stomach sleepers, and it's soft. If even a soft pillow feels too tall, the honest answer may be a thin pillow or no pillow at all.
Five picks are listed for combination or all positions. That label means the maker thinks the pillow works for more than one position. It doesn't tell you the height. If you turn over a lot, an adjustable pillow is worth a look.
Here's what each fill is, in plain words, and which picks use it.
Solid memory foam is one molded block that holds a shape. The C CUSHION LAB pillow is solid foam cut into a cervical shape, with a raised edge for the neck and a dip for the head. Shredded memory foam is small foam pieces in a zipped case. The Clara Clark pillow uses shredded foam, and its loft is adjustable, so you can take fill out until the height is right. Both state CertiPUR-US foam. For more, see memory foam pillows and shredded memory foam pillows.
Latex is springier than memory foam and pushes back sooner. The Cheer Collection Dual Sided pillow is latex, firm, with adjustable loft and ventilated latex foam as its stated cooling feature. See latex pillows.
Down is the soft underlayer of a bird's coat. Feathers are the stiffer outer ones with a quill. More down means softer and lighter; more feather means more push. This list has two pure down picks (Casper, soft; Continental Bedding, medium-firm with an 800 fill power stated), one feather pick (Canadian Down & Feather Company, soft), and two down and feather picks (Brooklinen, firm; Columbia, medium-soft). The APSMILE pillow is listed as a hybrid blend. See down pillows and feather pillows.
I've fluffed more down pillows at turn-down than anyone should. A good shake every morning is part of owning one. That isn't a flaw. It's housekeeping.
Down alternative is polyester fiber made to feel like down. The two picks here are the Acanva (soft) and the Beckham Hotel Collection (medium-firm). Both come as pairs. See down alternative pillows.
Kapok is a fluffy fiber from the seed pods of the kapok tree. The Bean Products Organic Kapok Pillow is firm, standard size at 20 x 26 inches, with adjustable loft and an organic cotton cover. See kapok pillows.
There's no buckwheat pillow in this round. If hulls are what you're after, the buckwheat pillows page has the full type, and our guide to buckwheat pillow benefits explains how they feel.
Firmness words aren't measured the same way by every maker. One maker's "medium-firm" can feel like another's "firm". Read the word as a direction, not a number.
In this list, three picks are soft or plush, two are medium-soft, two are medium-firm and five are firm. That spread is the point. If you know you like soft, you have three to compare. If you know you like firm, you have five, across five different fills.
Loft is the other half. Only one pick in this list states a loft in inches. The rest leave it out, so the table shows a dash. Dev asked me why a pillow wouldn't say how tall it is. I told him it's the same reason his hockey stats are private. (He didn't laugh. He's still working on that season.)
The federal labeling rule published by NIST uses a standard pillow of 20 x 26 inches as its example. Queen and king pillows are longer, but the exact inches are the maker's. The Bean Products kapok pillow states 20 x 26 inches; the APSMILE king states 20 x 36; the Beckham queen states 20 x 28. Others name only the size word.
At the hotel, a king pillow stuffed into a standard case was the first thing I fixed on any floor. It looks like a sausage, and the open end lets the pillow slide out by morning. The guest never noticed. The pillow always did.
Two habits help:
See standard size pillows, queen size pillows and king size pillows, or check the bedding size guide.
First, read the care tag. In this list, three picks say the whole pillow can go in the washer: the Acanva, the Casper and the Columbia set. Two say only the cover is machine washable: the C CUSHION LAB and the Clara Clark. The rest don't state care in our data, so check the tag when it arrives.
That difference matters more than people expect. A foam pillow with a washable cover is easy to keep fresh. A foam pillow without one needs a pillow protector from day one. A fiber or down pillow that goes in the washer whole saves you a trip somewhere every season. Our guide on how to wash pillows goes step by step.
Housekeeping rule: a pillow protector under the pillowcase. It takes the weekly wash so the pillow doesn't have to.
A few words show up in the table only when the maker states them for that model:
The keyword says elderly, so here's the practical version. No pillow is made for an age. What tends to matter is weight, care and fit.
If a pillow is meant to help with neck, shoulder or back trouble, that's a question for their doctor first. We have a separate list of pillows for neck pain that keeps to the makers' own wording.
You don't need a new pillow just because a list exists. If your pillow still springs back after you fold it, doesn't sag in the middle and you wake up without a stiff neck, keep it. Wash it, put a protector on it and tell everyone you're done shopping.
This list also isn't the right place if you already know you need a shaped pillow. Start with cervical pillows, body pillows or wedge pillows instead. And these are adult bed pillows. For a child, go to kids' pillows, where the maker's stated minimum age shows in the table.
We started with every bed pillow in our data whose maker or listing states both a fill and a firmness. Then we kept one pillow per brand and no more than two per fill, so the list covers memory foam, latex, kapok, down, feather, down alternative and blends. Specs come from the makers first, then from the listings, and every field in the table shows only what one of them states. The data is from our late-October 2026 check, and the list is rebuilt when the data changes.
We haven't slept on, washed or weighed any of these pillows. The specs are the makers'. The choosing is yours, and the pillow quiz is a good place to start if you're still not sure of your position.
Tuck it in.
The one that fits your sleep position. Comfort is mostly height and firmness. Side sleepers usually want a taller, firmer pillow, back sleepers a medium one, and stomach sleepers a soft, low one or none, as the Better Sleep Council suggests. Fill changes the feel. Pick the position first, then a fill you like.
There's no pillow made for an age. Practical points matter more: a pillow that goes in a home washer, a firmness that suits the sleeper's usual position, and adjustable loft if they aren't sure of their height. If neck or back pain is part of the question, that's one for their doctor first.
No. We haven't collected buyer reviews for these pillows yet, so this page doesn't summarize any. The list is built from what the makers and listings state: fill, firmness, size, sleep position and care. We also kept the list to one pillow per brand and two per fill.
The Better Sleep Council says its research points to a new pillow about every 2.8 years, with down alternative pillows lasting about 1 to 2 years and polyester 6 months to 2 years. Replace one sooner if it sags, stays lumpy after fluffing or has turned yellow.
Match the pillow to the bed and the case. A standard pillow is the common example of 20 x 26 inches. Queen and king pillows are longer, but exact inches vary by maker, so read the label. Buy pillowcases that name the same pillow size.
